THE TRAIN IN CINEMA
Ever since 1895, when pioneering French cinematographer Louis
Lumiere's minute-long film "The Arrival of a Train" caused a sensation
in Paris theaters, filmmakers have been captivated by the romance of
rail travel. Now, New York's Museum of Modern Art is celebrating that
long-running love affair with "Junction and Journey: Trains and
Film," an exhibition of over a hundred feature films, shorts,
documentaries, and animated works from around the globe--all relating
to trains. In addition to Lumiere's trailblazing short, the film
program ranges from Alfred Hitchcock's suspense classics to such
popular modern movies as "Back to the Future III" and "Stand by Me."
The exhibit runs through September 20, with film showings daily. For
program information call (212) 708-9480.
